One of the film's main plot points is that Kendra and Brett (two kids from Evan's school) want to have their first kiss with each other but can't because of Kendra's mother. Elaborate plans are made by them and their classmates to make this kiss happen. And eventually, we do see two kisses between teen couples.

Evan wants to call off the Bar Mitzvah party because it would only be him, Patrice, and Archie, but Patrice and Archie point out it that won't be that bad, and Evan starts to agree. He surprises Patrice with a kiss, and she surprises him back ("If That's What It Is").

Brett, the most popular kid in school, has summoned up the courage to ask Kendra, the prettiest girl in school, to a scary movie on Friday night so that he can kiss her ("Hey, Kendra"). Despite her best friend, Lucy's, attempts to dissuade her, Kendra consents.

Teenage hi-jinks, including cursing, crude jokes, lots of bathroom humor; some kissing and a couple of jokes about being a peeping tom (making light of it); and lots of lying and parental manipulation, including hacking into a computer system to lie about grades and lying about being expelled.

This somewhat follows the original story from the past Broadway musical, the music is good and the cast is super talented. Where it falls short is too much was changed from the musical, the story falls short. It doesn't leave the audience with anything to think about, it's just generic.

Many scenes show social drinking. The 13-year-old in a 30-year-old body has her first experiences with adult beverages and gets slightly tipsy. An underage girl talks about buying beer. Marijuana and a couple of illegal drugs are mentioned briefly.

Parents are alerted to be very careful about the attendance of their under-teenage children. A PG-13 film is one which leaps beyond the boundaries of the PG rating in theme, violence, nudity, sensuality, language, or other contents, but does not quite fit within the restricted R category.

Parents need to know that 1980s classic Say Anything survives as an excellent, coming-of-age movie for teens. Teens-to-be also may enjoy it, but it may not be suitable for them, with its teen drinking, teen sex, profanity (including one "f--k"), and parental betrayal.
