What is Black History Month?

Black History Month, also known as African-American History Month, is an important yearly celebration in the US to commemorate the historical role of the African people in America.

It is also celebrated to pay great importance to the huge achievements of Black men and women that shaped the US today.

Other countries around the world including Canada, Ireland, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom, also celebrate this important event.

How it Started

In 1926, Carter G. Woodson, a historian and founder of the Association for the Study of African American Life and History, initiated the Negro History Week to promote the achievements of Black people.

It was first celebrated from February 12 to February 20 to coincide with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass.

The Negro History Week eventually grew in popularity throughout the years, which later was endorsed to be an official holiday celebrated.

When is the Black History Month?

Black History Month is being observed for the whole month of February, and this 2021, the theme is “Black Family: Representation, Identity, and Diversity”.
