Irish Creme Coffee Bombs

If you've ever had an Irish creme (cream) coffee, then you know it has a kick of whiskey behind the creamy and sweet coffee. Making that at home is often done with Bailey's as it is a great blend of creaminess, but you can create your own unique coffee bomb with the same creamy flavor and just enough whiskey to "wake you up" or warm your belly. This recipe is for adults only and is a perfect choice for an after-dinner drink.

What is a Coffee Bomb?

There are many versions of the term coffee bomb, but in this instance, it is referring to a chocolate sphere that is filled with tasty things that will mix into coffee once melted. Similar to the popular hot cocoa or hot chocolate bombs of recent months, it is a bit more upscale trend for coffee drinkers.

A coffee bomb is to be made and placed into a mug to pour hot coffee over to melt. As the chocolate melts, the inside filling items will float out into the coffee and can be stirred to combine. The result is a flavored coffee drink that is also fun to make and enjoy.

What Can I Put Inside a Coffee Bomb?

You can put anything you want inside a coffee bomb! Whatever you might ordinarily put into your coffee can go inside the coffee bomb. While this particular version is all about the Irish creme flavor, you can change that out to suit our preferences by following the same basic process. Below are a few ideas that go great inside a coffee bomb for a fun little flavored coffee treat.

  • Flavored syrups to enhance the coffee flavor
  • Hazelnut, chocolate, caramel, or other flavored powdered or liquid creamers
  • Sprinkles, chocolate chips, or even candy bits to melt into the coffee

Is Irish Creme Alcoholic?

Irish creme is often known by the brand name Bailey's, and in this case, is definitely an alcoholic beverage. It is not a kid-friendly drink as it does contain whiskey. That said, not all Irish creme flavored items are alcoholic.

You can achieve the same general flavor in a nonalcoholic manner by adding 1 part rum or brandy extract/flavoring to 4 parts apple cider vinegar. It gives a similar flavor without the alcohol. As my family doesn't personally drink alcohol, this would be the way I would prepare this coffee bomb. In place of the whiskey, I would mix together ½ teaspoon rum extract with 2 to 2/12 teaspoons apple cider vinegar and divide among the chocolate spheres.

When Should I Serve an Irish Cream Coffee Bomb?

I love a good cup of coffee with dessert. One of the best times to serve this particular coffee drink is with cake. At least, that is my opinion. The recently discovered easy blender chocolate cake is perfect, or you can go upscale with the chocolate cheesecake recipe. Of course, it's a great choice alongside the basic old fashioned pound cake or the classic New York style cheesecake.

While you can serve this alone or with any flavor you wish, I find it complements the chocolate and vanilla flavored desserts the best. Cookies, biscotti, cake, or pies all can work alongside this Irish creme coffee.
