In case you missed it, clogs for women are making a serious comeback. Previously categorized as part of the “ugly shoe trend,” clogs are now welcomed by high fashion with open arms. Since their breakout in the Spring of 2018, Crocs’ Classic Clogs set the scene for a new era of ugly-cute. As a result, trendsetters like Prada, Simon Miller, Isabel Marant, Clarks, and of course, Birkenstock took note and rose to the challenge to create modern iterations that took the internet by storm.

Women’s clogs are nothing novel. Their silhouette dates back to the 13th century in Europe, where they were carved by hand from wooden blocks and characterized by their clicking sound when worn. However, today’s designs mix the traditional clog style with more modern materials, such as leather and cloth. What makes them so coveted is that there are many options that suit any mood, occasion, and season. They can be worn in the summer in place of a women’s sandal, in the fall with a mini skirt, or in the winter with leather pants.

Recently, clogs have been feeling the celebrity love when Zaya Wade wore a pair of platform clogs in Paris, Hailey Bieber styled Puma bubble clogs with her chic workout uniform, and Hoyeon Jung wore a pair in Paris for Fashion Week. The effortless slip-on has also garnered significant attention on TikTok. Search the term “Style clogs,” and you’ll discover it has 90.6B views, or “Boston clogs” and learn that it has 9.6B views. Beloved by millennials, it’s no wonder designers love them too. Major footwear brands continue to create simple and avant-garde clogs. Recently, New Balance is the latest brand to join in on the popular clog trend with their foam clogs. Additionally, Crocs released new echo clogs to celebrate its 20th anniversary.

Now that we know clogs can fit various tastes, are fashion-forward, and are a safe year-round option, consider this your sign to shop. Keep scrolling to check out 23 styles that range from the trendiest clogs to the best works shoes for women, the most comfortable shoes for standing all day, and even clogs for nurses to express their personal style.

What Are Clogs?

The style we refer to as clogs today are most like the wooden Dutch “klompen” shoes worn by farmers and factory workers as far back as the 13th century. Other cultures around the world had their versions, too, like Japan’s wooden platform “geta” sandals or Turkey’s wooden platform “nalin” bathing sandals.

Like the Dutch versions, modern clogs have a closed toe with a roomy toe box. A clog typically consists of one or two materials — one material comprising the entire base and upper of the shoe, or one material for the sole and one for the upper.

Clogs are often confused with a mule because they’re similar. However, while every clog is a mule, not every mule is a clog. To make that less of an S.A.T. riddle, just remember that a mule means a backless style. So, a backless loafer is a mule, as is your favorite pair of high heel sandals that don’t have straps to go around your ankles.

Since the majority of clogs are backless, they’re mostly mules, but plenty have a back strap — like Crocs — or an entire back to the shoe.

What reviewers say:This is my third time buying these shoes for operating room use. They are comfortable for long hours of standing. The Different Types of Clogs for Women

  • Wooden Clogs for Women: The classic Dutch wooden clog has been around since the 1200s; however, today’s versions have been iterated to solely include wood in the heel or the platform. Designers like Isabel Marant, Sleeper, and J.Crew are a few of the brands leading the way with the silhouette. Though some boast more of a heel than others, the forefront of the shoe will always include a gold round studded hardware and a reasonably substantial platform, giving height without pain.
  • Nursing Clogs for Women: Today, nurses’ outfits have taken on a fresh look. Gone are the days of head-to-toe white — colorful uniforms and scrubs are now taking its place, footnoted with classic clogs in fun patterns and prints. These novel looks are packed with all the features necessary to keep nurses safe and comfortable, from lightweight slip-resistant outsoles to cushioned footbeds, antimicrobial linings, and stain-resistant uppers. Look to brands like FitFlop and Dansko for supportive and comfortable styles that won’t hinder nurses from being on their feet for 12-hour shifts or longer.
  • Gardening Clogs for Women: Gardening boots are great, but gardening clogs are better for those looking for lightweight and affordable options. Gardening clogs from Hunter, Oofos, and Fitflop offer superior performance and are available in lots of fun prints and colors while being affordable. Plus, they’ll do double duty on a rainy day or a walk through the park with your dog — making them well worth the buy.
  • Platform Clogs for Women: Many clogs have taken on new heights in 2023, but platform clogs have caught our attention the most. They may be notable for their appeal in iconic movies such as Clueless and Jawbreaker, but today, they are making a comeback on the runways of top designers such as Simon Miller, Gucci, and Longchamp. If there is anything this platform-clogs trendy comeback can teach you about fashion, it is that almost all trends come back. These days, you can find some of the most popular bloggers, celebrities, and influencers wearing platform clogs as fashion statements.

What to Consider When Shopping for the Most Comfortable Clogs for Women

With women ditching the stiletto heels for low-key shoes like clogs and wide sandals, you’d think they would be more comfortable than ever. However, it only takes one day of walking in an unsupportive shoe to know that’s not always the case.

Dr. Glenn Davison, the owner of Advanced Podiatry in New York City and New Jersey and a fellow in the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons, says a traditional clog’s wooden footbed won’t do your feet any favors. “The problem with a really rigid bottom is that there is just no give,” he explains. “Your arches are going to mold to the shape of it because the hard surface is less flexible than your own anatomy.”

This can lead to a host of painful foot issues. So if there’s a trendy clog you’re dying to wear that isn’t your most comfortable shoe, just be mindful of the occasion you choose to wear it. “If you’re sitting around at a desk or at a restaurant, there’s nothing wrong with wearing a fashionable shoe” that isn’t ergonomically supportive, Dr. Davison.

Insoles: When you intend to walk around and be on the go, it’s important to choose a clog with key features to support your feet, ankles, knees, and back. Rather than a wooden insole, Davison says to look for shock-absorbing insoles with cushioning. This will help anyone suffering from plantar fasciitis and heel spurs. Additionally, “look for built-in support that’s structured more like a sneaker would be,” he advises. Think arch support and an ergonomic insole. These orthotic features help both high arches and low arches, also known as flat feet, Davison says.

His main tip for picking the best clog is to look inside the shoe. “You’ll know by looking if it has a built-in arch and softer, spongier material,” he says. “They will certainly be more comfortable [than a wooden insole clog].”

Your Foot Condition/s:

  • For bunions: If you want the best shoes for bunions, we recommend choosing one that doesn’t have a heel. While high heels don’t directly cause bunions, they exacerbate the problem, causing certain parts of the foot to absorb more pressure than others, leading to pronation. Additionally, one of the biggest keys for bunion sufferers is to look for a wide shoe fit and a roomy toe box. “Avoid straight or narrow toe beds,” Davison warns, which can result in painful friction.
  • For plantar fasciitis: When it comes to the best shoes to treat plantar fasciitis, you want a clog that keeps your foot position neutral. “Some people have flat feet and tend to overpronate, and some people have a higher arch and are over supinators,” says Dr. Brad Schaeffer, owner of Sole Podiatry N.Y.C. “It’s the job of your doctor to show each patient what foot type they have. It’s also important for our shoes and insoles to support every step we take.”
  • For knee pain: Finding the right shoes for knee pain begins by understanding the source of your discomfort, which can vary, says Dr. Mark Mendeszoon, a podiatrist and owner of Achilles Running Shop in Pennsylvania. If you have flat feet, a shoe with “proper support, cushioning, and posting helps ’neutralize’ abnormal stresses and forces” on the foot, Mendeszoon says. Additionally, you can look for shoes for those with high arches since they go heavier on the cushioning.
  • For flat feet: “Wider-lasted shoes are the best option, which means they shouldn’t have an hourglass shape on the bottom,” Dr. Matthew Fishkin says. “Instead, they should have a straight-across design underfoot.” Wider shoes help cradle the foot and avoid painful pinching, chafing, and rubbing for people with flat feet. Additionally, Fishkin suggests styles with enhanced stability and motion control features for patients with flat feet. These foot types tend to overpronate (meaning their feet roll inward as they walk), so choosing a stability shoe designed to curb overpronation can help kill two birds with one stone.
  • For heel spurs: A heel spur often develops from overuse, like plantar fasciitis or ill-fitting shoes. That’s why proper shoes for heel spurs can prevent and alleviate pain from the condition.“If you have a spur, you need a cushy heel,” Dr. Mike Rushton, co-founder, and medical director of Forward Motion Orthotics, says. Anatomical arch support is also helpful in promoting healthy foot alignment. Good alignment means the entire foot will absorb the impact of every step rather than just the heel.
