What are the best practices for rock painting? ›

The best way to paint rocks is to use a thin brush and acrylic paint. Acrylic paints dry quickly, and after a few minutes, a new coat can be applied over the previous one. You will definitely need a thin brush for painting small details. Large brushes are required only when working with large rocks.

Collect some rocks

A smooth rock with a flat surface works best, but you can also work a design around a rock's peculiarities. Don't take rocks from parking lots or yards — people want to keep their landscaping. Gather a wide array and then wash and dry them before guests arrive.

What Kinds of Paint Do You Use for Rock Painting? We recommend using acrylic paint for both the base coat and your design. For more intricate, hand-painted designs, we suggest that you use paint pens to draw on top of your base coat.

Rock art includes pictographs (drawings or paintings), petroglyphs (carvings or inscriptions), engravings (incised motifs), petroforms (rocks laid out in patterns), and geoglyphs (ground drawings).

Arrange the rocks on a table, placing them together in their groups. Place each group of rocks into small boxes or containers. You could also put your rocks in the holes of an egg carton. Use scissors to cut out the number of holes you need.

You can base your collection on many different factors, like color, shape, texture or anything that you find interesting. Many rock hounds try to collect all the related rocks from the area where they live. Others look for unusual rocks from every place they visit.

To prep your rock for painting, just give them a good cleaning and then dry them off. You can use any regular acrylic paint, but I chose to use these outdoor acrylic paints from Hobby Lobby. These paints don't require a sealer on top, but if you use regular acrylic paint, then you must apply a sealer when done.

The best paint to use for rock art is craft acrylic paint, needing only 5 colors -red, blue, yellow, white, and black. These colors can produce a wide variety of hues when combined in specific ways. Craft acrylic paint is the preferred choice for most rock painters. It comes in many colors, it's cheap and has a thin consistency that's easy to paint with on rocks. Heavy-body acrylic paints can be used but will need to be thinned down with water or an acrylic medium for smooth thin strokes.

Lots of people ask whether or not they need a base coat before decorating, this is down to personal choice. Most people paint or draw directly onto their rocks and pebbles but you can prime them in a base coat of gesso or acrylic.

Priming your rocks before you start painting is important for two reasons: the surface will be smoother and less porous, but still porous enough to absorb paint permanently (as opposed to a polished rock, ceramic or glass for example).

Before painting on your rock, it's a good idea to apply a few coats of gesso to create a more welcoming surface for paint. I demonstrate how to do this in my video and explain why it's recommended. (Basically, it helps the paint stick to the rock better, and makes the paint colors appear more vibrant.)

Three techniques were generally used to remove the rock surface; incising/engraving (lines are cut into the rock with a sharp tool); pecking (hammering and chipping away at the rock surface) and scraping. Rock faces were sometimes 'prepared' by scraping, allowing for an improved surface on which to inscribe the image.

By nature, rocks can be dirty and they will need to be cleaned before they are suitable for painting. It is easy to forget this step until you are applying paint and find that the paint is not adhering to the rock and instead is flaking off with the dirt and debris that is coming off of the rock.
